Acceptance Speech
Nothing in my life can compare to the day Leslie said "I do" or the day our son Mac was born. But let me tell you something: tonight is definitely in the top 3.
I wish to thank my family, particularly Leslie for loving me and supporting me. Without her patience and belief in me, I wouldn't be on this stage tonight.
I wish to thank my friends and colleagues and supporters. Without your hard work and your sacrifice, I wouldn't be on this stage tonight.
And I wish to thank the voters because without your trust and your confidence, I wouldn't be on this stage tonight.
Throughout the campaign, I had a secret weapon.
The secret weapon wasn't Buzz or Mike, although without their efforts, I could not have possibly won this election.
The secret weapon wasn't Stanley, my son's over affectionate Golden Retriever, who believes his presence in my campaign photograph was my margin of victory.
My secret weapon was a button. A little, yellow, circa. 1970 smiley face button with the legend "Sedita." You see, the button I wore for my first campaign was the button my grandfather wore for his last campaign.
I didn't wear it so much for luck because my grandfather lost his last campaign. I wore it for other reasons. I wore it because I wanted him to walk with me. Just as importantly, I wore it because of what he stood for: professionalism, decency and integrity.
I have been afforded a great honor and a great responsibility and therefore pledge to run the District Attorney's Office with professionalism and with decency and with integrity. That is what my grandfather would expect because that is what the citizens of this county deserve.
